In fact, Murrells Inlet holds four places on the National Historic Registry…Atalaya Castle, the winter residence of Archer and Ana Huntington, the Murrells Inlet Historic District (the area around the Marshwalk), the Parrish’s Motor Court (now known as the Brookwood Inn) and Brookgreen Gardens.

Murrells Inlet, SC is an unincorporated town partially in Horry County and partially in Georgetown County. Murrells Inlet stretches from Garden City Beach to Litchfield Beach.

The median sales price for single family homes in Murrells Inlet sold in September 2024 was $491,500 while the median sales price for condos and townhomes was $329,950. 

The heart of Murrells Inlet is the Marshwalk. The Marshwalk in Murrells Inlet is a couple of miles of waterfront dining and shops nestled beneath hundred year old oak trees off of Business 17. History of Murrells Inlet

Pirates, ghosts and beautiful landscapes...

Murrells Inlet, SC, the “quaint fishing village”, is rooted in history and ghost stories. The town was officially named Murrells Inlet in 1913 by the post office, but the history goes back hundreds of years.

John Morrall, the English colonist whom Murrells Inlet is likely named after, settled on the inlet in 1731. This was only a few decades after Charleston, SC was settled making Murrells Inlet one of the oldest coastal communities in South Carolina.

Legend has it that Blackbeard roamed around the land that is now Murrells Inlet and buried some treasure here! Our tidal creeks were also a great hiding spot for pirates waiting to attack English ships. 

In the 1800s, the fertile soil of Murrells Inlet was filled with rice plantations. Those rice plantations were the main source of business for Murrells Inlet until the early 1900s. What is now Brookgreen Gardens used to be four rice plantations. You are still able to see the old rice fields there.

As with most of America, the economy of Murrells Inlet suffered during The Great Depression. An economic boom came during the Depression when Archer Milton Huntington developed his 9,000 acre estate – his estate ran from the ocean to the river. Today, the home, Atalaya, is part of the Huntington Beach State Park, and the gardens created Brookgreen Gardens

Murrells Inlet transitioned to a resort area in the early 1900s. Residents of nearby areas would travel by way of the Waccamaw River to cottages along Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island.
