Garden City Beach, SC
Laid-back living at the beach!
Garden City Beach is a beautiful, quieter section of the Grand Strand. Because it is a quieter section of the beach, it is a great spot for sea turtles to lay their eggs. In the spring, sea turtle volunteers (part of the SCUTE team) walk the beach at sunrise looking for evidence of new nests. In the late summer and early fall, the nests start to hatch and the hatchlings make their way to the ocean. Keep an eye on the SCUTE Facebook page for the public nest inventories. Seeing a nest inventory is a wonderful experience to see!
It is an unincorporated town partially in Horry County and partially in Georgetown County. Garden City Beach is tucked between Surfside Beach and Murrells Inlet.
In Garden City Beach, you will find very few high-rise condo complexes and more low to mid-rise condo complexes, duplexes and single family homes. On South Waccamaw Drive to The Point, you will only find a mostly a mix of old beach homes and new grand ocean front properties with a few condo complexes mixed in. The median sales price for single family homes in Garden City Beach sold in October 2024 was $892,500 while the median sales price for condos and townhomes was $180,000.
Garden City Beach is a great place for larger groups to get together for vacation. Many rent the homes on or near the beach for their weekly summer vacation.
The beach, inlet and the Pier are the heart of Garden City Beach. Most mornings you will see fisherman on the beach surf fishing. Throughout the day, people fish from the walkway or crab in the marsh along Atlantic Avenue. Yoga classes are taught on the beach in the mornings and evenings and there is always some enjoying a walk or run on the beach. Surfing and paddle boarding are also popular in Garden City Beach. From the pier, you can fish, grab a bite to eat, people watch, enjoy gorgeous ocean views and listen to live music.

History of Garden City Beach
Past hurricanes shaped the future
History
As with any beach town, you do have to be mindful of hurricane season (June 1 – November 30). Garden City Beach today was shaped by the hurricanes of the past.
Hurricane Hazel officially made landfall in 1954 in Calabash, NC, but the area did suffer some damage. In fact, only two houses remained habitable after the storm passed (it was not as populated as it is today). Garden City Beach, again, sustained damage by a major hurricane when Hurricane Hugo made landfall at Sullivan’s Island in 1989.
The area re-built after both hurricanes and, thankfully, has not been hit by a major hurricane since then. Garden City Beach is now known as a quieter, less commercialized beach along the Grand Strand where surfers come to enjoy the waves in a less busy part of town.
Properties for Sale
The ocean, tidal creeks and marsh land of Garden City Beach is now home to many full-time residents and the short-term home of people from across the country looking for some relaxation. You can purchase anything from a small condo to use as your vacation home or primary residence to a 7+ bedroom ocean front beach house.
Properties here can have views of the water, both of ocean and marsh, and often are dotted with Spanish moss covered oak trees that are hundreds of years old or Palmetto trees to remind you that you are at the beach.
